When a large dog such as a German Shepherd growls it may be very terrifying to someone, particularly to children. When growling becomes a habit for your German Shepherd, you should prevent it.

Growling is Communication?

Growling is one way that the dog converses with you, with other puppies, with other people, and with strangers. Customarily growling is a reaction to stimuli like each time a stranger comes near. Growling is a dog's method of warning someone to stay away. Most folks heed a German Shepherd's warning.

Risks to a dog could come in the form of being harmed unintentionally. A dog may be calling attention to his presence in the room.

Sometimes, growling can be acceptable if your dog is being trained to be a guard dog. But you should never support growling at a family member or other pleasant people.

If your puppy growls when you go to the dog park and he meets a new dog, or he growls when he meets a stranger, these aren't strange dog behaviors. The dog may be too tense and cannot relax. However, your pet should be well-behaved when he is with you at all times.

If your dog is growling at you or a friend in your own home, this is unacceptable behavior. Your pet may be acting like he's superior to you which is a bad thing.

Be Careful When Trying to stop Growling Behavior in Dogs

If your puppy is growling at you, do not force a conflict or try physical punishment with your dog. Confrontations will only aggravate the circumstances. Your puppy could bite you, or your pet could become scared of you if you hurt him.

The first thing to do is to get your puppy checked by a vet to rule out the possibility of physical injury. In some cases there can be a physical reason for a dog's behavior when he growls. Proceed with training if there's nothing wrong with him physically.

Train Your Puppy to Stop Growling

Training is still the most effective way. On your own, this problem can be too much. A trainer can help you figure out a education program for your dog. Training can also help your German Shepherd grow to be loyal to you again. If you show authority, your pet will do all that he can to satisfy you. German Shepherds are usually tractable so schooling will do you good. Your pet will become compliant again.

Once you and your German Shepherd have restored your relationship you can discourage any other growling that your dog has been engaging in. When he growls at something or somebody improperly you can give him a command to do something else and it will stop the growling. Your puppy will be under your proper control, as he should be.

Growling can be a warning of animosity, pain or communication among pet dogs. But, it is not acceptable for your German Shepherd to growl at you or other members of your family. A training program can help you assert your authority without aggravating the state of affairs.
