Just like humans, dogs sometimes get scared, too. Their fear may be the result of past experiences or traumas. Whatever the case may be for your dog, or any dog, he is unlikely to overcome that fear unless you help him do so.

Having you there when they are scared will be a great comfort to them. Unfortunately, many dogs are scared of a relatively common event: thunderstorms. Some dogs almost freak out when the storm hits and the thunder shakes up the sky.

If your dog, too, almost dies of fear whenever thunder rumbles, then you might fight the following advice quite helpful.

First: treats. Giving your pet some treats during thunderstorms will help plant an idea in their mind. They will slowly realize that during this fearful time you are there to keep them safe and happy. They will be able to overcome the fear with your help.

If you always give your dog treats during thunderstorms, he will eventually pick up on that, and he'll realize that thunderstorms aren't all bad for him. In fact, he will get treats and your attention. So keep those treats coming.

Also make them feel comfortable. You are the best answer to your dog's fear of thunderstorms. When they start showing anxiety due to the storm, talk to them calmly.

Spending time with your dog during the storm will be a great help. It will be reassuring to have someone around him - being alone right now might only intensify the fear.

And here is another approach: on an ordinary day, you could simply play a tape with the sounds of thunder on it.

Whenever you do so, make sure to be there for them. Don't just play the tape and leave. Be there for them and help them through it. That way, when there is a real thunderstorm, your dog will already be used to the sound.
