It's going to depend on a number of different factors when it comes to which is the best flea treatment for your pet. One of the things that you have to think about, for example, is what your priorities are in dealing with the infestation, and another is what kind of pet you have. While the options will be gone through here, it's best to talk to your vet about what is going to be best in your situation.

Natural or Chemical?

When it comes to choosing a flea treatment for your pet, you'll have two main options. One is to use chemicals while the other one is to use a natural treatments. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and it depends on what priorities you have as to which you choose.

If you want to get rid of the fleas from your pet as quickly as possible then you are going to have to use chemical treatments. These act quickly and they last for a long time. For example if you feed a tablet to your pet that combats fleas, for quite a while afterwards any flea that bites your pet and sucks up their blood will die from their nervous system shutting down.

Sometimes though these kinds of negative treatments can lead to negative side effects. For instance there is a concern that the substance which affects the nervous system of a flea will also affect your pet's nervous system. Also, with a spray or a lotion, sometimes hair loss results.

If your priority, instead, is that you want to make sure that you do not harm your pet with the treatment that you give then, you'll have to go down the natural route. One of the main ways you can do that is by utilizing flea baths. Although that only really applies to dogs as cats would hate all of that water.

The disadvantage with natural treatments though mirrors the advantage of chemical treatments. That is, a natural treatment is not going to last very long. While a flea bath should get rid of all the fleas currently on your pet for instance, there is nothing to stop other fleas getting on your pet after that.

So the one way that you could make the formulation as to which kind of treatment you want to use is by considering how severe the infestation of fleas is. If it's not very bad then you might as well use natural treatments. However if it's a severe flea infestation then you might prefer to take the risk of using chemicals in order to giver your pet the longer lasting relief from the fleas.

Getting Rid of the Fleas in your House

It doesn't matter which treatment you choose though, you are still going to have to treat your property for fleas as well. It's necessary that a flea treatment for your house is also performed because fleas do not grow in to adults on your pet, they do so in the environment they are living in.

When it comes to this area as well there are also two different options. In this case though the best choice is quite clear, it is to use pest control operatives to fumigate the area in order to get rid of them all very quickly. Sometimes though people choose to do it themselves, in which case a thorough cleaning regime will be necessary.

If you take the cleaning approach then one of the first things you should do is wash everything associated with your pet, that you can, at high temperatures. That should get rid of any growing fleas on them. It's also going to be necessary to vacuum everywhere, for the things that you cannot wash.

While vacuuming is going to be a good start as that is going to get rid of all of the eggs, you will have to do more than that to get the larvae. That's because flea larvae are so tiny they can wrap themselves around the strands in a carpet and resist a vacuum cleaner. To be sure of the best results, using a pest control service instead is the best idea.
